Director, Performance Fabric (IPSS)

The Performance Fabric leader will build a strong fabric team in the Global Supply Chain to drive raw material strategy and best practice in Fabric Research and Development. The role will lead the integration of an end to end best practice fabric development process with the brand and Global Sourcing. The role will ensure our fabric strategy supports viable product and cost savings for Gap Inc. while ensuring that performance quality is achieved. This leadership role will liaise at various intersections across the organization to cultivate newness, quality and end to end partnership on Performance Fabric.

  • Strategic leadership in developing a strong fabric team, providing vision and direction, building capability and providing coaching to the team
  • Drive performance fabric strategy and Research & development for new product concepts that result in growth opportunities in the market.
  • Influence brands and mills to ensure the development process is effective and efficient in order to manage workload and drive consistent and best in class performance fabric
  • Possess advanced knowledge of performance fabric manufacturing, functional performance and consumers’ requirements, establish substantial insights to feed into the development of the advanced product idea through advanced technologies
  • Collaborate with teams across the organization to ensure developing effective relationships with mills and preferred vertical vendors; help enhance the quality of our fabric supplier relationships towards strategic partnerships, develop mill negotiation strategy which includes building appropriate fabric supplier base including direct mill and, in collaboration with vendor management, vertical vendors.
  • Identify research facilities and chemical suppliers which are within/outside of textile industry to enable us to leverage innovative technologies with result of beneficial performance and development, lowered competitive cost and environment attrition.
  • Provide source strategy on performance material based on profitability, sustainability and deliveries.
  • Establish mill score cards and drive implementation to assist mill recommendations and evaluation.
  • Identify global/domestic material vendors. Visit production sites to explore innovative ideas, buildup partnerships and ensure the proper implementation and processing of the materials from development to bulk.
  • Visit fairs along with brand R & D and design teams to ensure they have technical experts guiding and coaching them to ensure intentional fabric selection. Also understand and align with design to ensure effective working relationship.
  • Work with Manager Capacity and RSC to ensure fabric and yarn negotiations are done in regularity to ensure seamless operation.
  • Good communication and presentation to related departments on the results, market knowledge and insights required and best practice to support transition of innovative technology to real product.
  • Keep strong sense and up-to-date market knowledge of the industry to assist strategy research and formulation.

External: Mills, Vendors

  • Bachelor's degree in textile or equivalent;
  • Additional Degree / Diploma in Management, merchandising, business administration, supply chain management, or related discipline preferred
  • 15 years of professional experience in Performance fabric sourcing, R&D and development
  • Exposure of handling global mills
  • Demonstrated ability to influence across functional leaders and peers to achieve business results
  • Strong stakeholder management and brand communication
  • Ability to effectively manage and plan resources to achieve goals and support ad-hoc initiatives
  • Demonstrate ability to deal head-on with issues and challenging situations
  • Ability to plan and successfully lead complex negotiations
  • Ability to manage, motivate and develop others
  • Excellent verbal, presentation and written skills
